There is a special kind of magic in traveling not just to places but into stories. Sitting beside my father as he guided our car through winding roads and bustling streets, I learned to see the world not simply as a collection of destinations but as a living tapestry of people, culture, and history. Each trip became a chapter of discovery that shaped my understanding of identity and belonging. Though my hands never gripped the steering wheel, my mind journeyed freely, absorbing every sight, sound, and emotion.
In 2012, I crossed the border into Bangladesh for the first time, stepping into a land that felt like a close relative with a unique rhythm of its own. The energy of Dhaka struck me instantly, a vibrant, noisy symphony of life that never seems to rest. In contrast, Sylhet offered a spiritual calmness where ancient mosques and misty hills invite contemplation and peace. A visit to Chittagong revealed a thriving port city, bustling yet layered with stories of the Assam-Bengal railway era, when trains once carried goods and dreams between these lands. The seaside of Cox's Bazar unfolded like a painter’s dream, its long, sandy stretch inviting travelers to linger. If you ever find yourself there, try to rise early for a sunrise over the Bay of Bengal; the golden light turning the waves into liquid fire is unforgettable. The lush greenery of Moulvibazar, Hingazia, Habiganj, Tajpur, Sunamganj, and Comilla welcomed us like old friends, each place offering quiet corners to breathe, reflect, and connect with nature. If you crave tranquility, these lesser-known spots offer a perfect retreat.
Over the years, our journeys took us to Tripura multiple times. Driving through the emerald roads from Agartala to Sunamura, I was struck by the region’s natural beauty and cultural warmth. Quiet villages dotted with traditional houses, the gentle flow of rivers, and the rich aromas of local spices create an atmosphere that is both peaceful and invigorating. If you are a traveler who loves to slow down and absorb local life, Tripura’s tea gardens and tribal markets provide a fascinating window into a different world.
In 2019, the road carried us north through some of India’s most historic and vibrant cities. Delhi’s sprawling chaos is an experience of its own, filled with colors, noises, and stories that range from ancient monuments to modern skyscrapers. Ajmer and Jaipur invited me into Rajasthan’s royal heritage, where forts and palaces stand as proud witnesses of history. No visit to India is complete without witnessing the Taj Mahal in Agra; its marble walls seem to hold an eternal love story. I highly recommend visiting early in the morning when the rising sun bathes the monument in soft light, offering a moment of serene beauty before the crowds arrive.
Punjab opened a new chapter in my travels. The Golden Temple in Amritsar is a place unlike any other, a spiritual sanctuary where thousands come together in harmony and devotion. Nearby, the silent grounds of Jallianwala Bagh whisper the heavy stories of sacrifice, reminding visitors of resilience and courage. A visit to the Wagah Border, known as the Attari border, added a powerful dimension to this journey. Watching the daily flag-lowering ceremony, where soldiers of India and Pakistan perform their carefully choreographed drills with fierce pride and precision, left me moved by the complex dance of rivalry and respect that defines this historic frontier. Standing there, between two nations, one could almost feel the weight of history in the air, a reminder of the enduring hopes for peace amidst division. Walking through cities like Mohali, Chandigarh, and the corporate sprawl of Noida, I witnessed the dynamic energy of modern India, where tradition and innovation coexist in complex balance.
While these journeys took me far, my mind often wandered back home to Barak Valley. It is a reminder that every place we visit adds a new color to our life’s canvas, but the heart always carries a place of belonging.
Travel in recent years slowed for many of us, but those quieter moments gave me space to reflect on what truly matters, the people we meet, the kindness we receive, and the memories that linger long after the journey ends. Celebrating Eid with dear friends in Bulandshahr taught me that hospitality transcends geography and culture, weaving bonds of friendship and shared humanity.
For anyone seeking to travel beyond the usual tourist paths, I suggest embracing the journeys as opportunities to connect, to listen to local stories, taste the authentic flavors, and walk with an open heart. Whether it’s the coastal breeze of Cox’s Bazar, the tea-scented air of Tripura, or the spiritual glow of the Golden Temple, each place invites you to see the world through new eyes.
Travel is not just movement; it is transformation. And as I look back at the roads I’ve traveled with my father at the wheel, I realize they have been roads to self-discovery, to history, and to the endless warmth of home.
